We really didn't know what to expect, but from the minute we were picked up, we felt very comfortable with our guides (Lauren and Dan) They really did a great job. We met a lot of great people on our trip and enjoyed the time we got to spend with them. New Zealand is fantastic and this really was a great trip. The only complaint I have is that we couldn't spend more time in a few of my favorite spots.

We really appreciated getting to out of the way places we would never have booked on our own.

I had a wonderful time on the Tortuga trip. Everything was very well organized - our days were full of wildlife spotting, biking, hiking, snorkeling, scuba. It was a very nicely mixed group - internationally, and age-wise (from mid-20's to 60's). I am an avid photographer and our guide was very accommodating of this, and I had LOTS of great photos to come home with. I absolutely would recommend this trip to anyone who wants to experience the Galapagos.

From beginning to end our trip exceeded our expectations! The guides were amazing! Dan and Amanda did everything in their power to ensure all the group were taken care. Our accommodations were very comfortable and meals provided and prepared by Amanda and Dan were delicious. Both guides were extremely knowledgable about everything to do with New Zealand. Dan's driving skills were impressive so everyone was comfortable and only needed to watch the passing scenery. By the end of our tour we truly felt we had experienced and seen everything the South Island had to offer. And to top it all off the weather was incredible. We felt so lucky and will never forget our Rimu trip! The South Island of New Zealand is a spectacular place and we would recommend Active New Zealand to everyone wishing to experience it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Rimu tour with Ben and Sarah. They are excellent guides who paid attention to each one of us and were very adaptive. The days were packed with activities and food was delicious! Sarah is a great cook and I was very surprised at the variety of dinners we had. Ben helped me through a challenging hike up Mt Cook, when I froze and didn't think I'd be able to go on at a point where the path disappeared and I was faced with boulders at the edge of the mountain. Scary. But with his encouragement I went on.
NZ of course is gorgeous. I didn't realize so many different micro climates existed on the South Island. Loved the changes from rain forests to beaches to drier areas to mountains and glaciers.
The only thing that took me aback was the difficulty of the 3-day backpacking option. After Mt Cook I realized I was not able to do the backpacking option. My knees are bad and the downhills would have been way too challenging for me to attempt. But, I completed the 1st day segment of the hike and spent the night in the hut. I would suggest that backpacking is not something everyone can handle, especially people with knee issues and it would help to include this in the tour description.
I definitely would like to return to NZ and spend more time in some of the places we visited.

Kayaking on Milford Sound was awesome, even as we wore our Dr. Seuss striped long underwear and kayak top.

I enjoyed the endless energy and good cheer of the leaders, Ken and Nicole, who are both excellent leaders who made it easy to follow a very busy schedule. I saw so many iconic new zealand highlands in a short period of time, which made my 6 days very efficient and the group was composed of great/funny people, which also made the trip worthwhile. The one slow up, which could have been improved on the trip, was the lack of the extra plane to get to the Siberian Wilderness so that slowed the start of our long hike and prevented us from reaching the hiking goal, so this might be an area that could be addressed if possible. However, overall the trip was wonderful and I would highly recommend it to all who want to consider taking a trip of a lifetime.

My Rimu trip took me to many less travelled areas of New Zealand. New Zealand has the best scenery in the world that I have seen and I have been in many places, on many continents. Rimu is definitely a hard-core active trip with some challenging hiking and conditions, but was accessible to even those with limited backpacking experience.

For years, I'd been hearing about the wonders of NZ from my sister. Could a country really be this magical? I had to find out. Well, it turns out it is! I explored the North Island on my own for a week and thoroughly enjoyed it, but the focus of my trip was the South Island. I wanted to challenge myself physically and explore the glorious remote places I had read about. After doing research, I decided that the two-week Rimu adventure with Active New Zealand was the right fit. I'm delighted to say that it exceeded my expectations in every way. Our guides Amelia & Nick were delightful, the itinerary was just right, and the weather was spectacular. I absolutely loved it. Thank you so much!

Note the bristly needles of the male Rimu tree... Dan and Amanda led our companionable group of eleven travelers on 14 days of bush, mountain, stream, and seaside adventures that not only challenged us physically but also provided endless stunning photo ops as well as memorable natural history lessons that added depth, knowledge, and enjoyment to a flawless trip. It would be impossible to get this much out of a 14-day trip planned on our own. Besides scheduling all the best outdoor activities and tramping opportunities, Active Adventures has transportation, accommodations and meals down to a science. After hiking, biking, snorkeling, or kayaking, our group rolled into our lodgings, got a key or room assignment without fuss, hit the shower and then enjoyed a glass of wine and munchies while Amanda whipped up one of her amazing meals. She fed us like lumberjacks—tasty dishes as diverse as baked fresh farm salmon and Moroccan tagine. (And, yes, there was always dessert.) A safe, skillful driver of our comfy van, trip leader Dan was also a font of ecological, geological and historical detail, as well as Maori lore. We especially loved his telling of the tale about how the kiwi came to live on the forest floor. On the occasions when we finished our scheduled activities early, Dan always had a bonus jaunt up his sleeve that led us to some unexpected and breathtaking location. Our three-day Angelus Circuit backpacking adventure in the Nelson Lakes National Park was the highlight of our trip. It ran the gamut of challenge from pleasant hiking through a rolling beech forest, to a steep climb to a mountain-top cabin (hufff, puff), and then to an early morning scramble across rocky, wind-swept Robert Ridge with its unparalleled top-of-the-world views. Once again, meals, even on this remote stretch of the trip, were tasty and satisfying. And they were HOT thanks to the efforts of irrepressibly cheerful Active Staffer Dave who joined the trip briefly for the sole purpose of backpacking a sizable canister of propane up the mountain. Along the Angelus Circuit, we got to sample the “nectar†exuded in droplets on beech bark by wood-boring insects as well as see a pair of black swans gliding on Lake Rotoiti. Elsewhere we learned to distinguish male from female rimu trees by the feel of their needles and to identify the tui bird by his white “bowtie.†The Rimu Trip was a fabulous experience led by professional, knowledgeable and hard working guides who made every effort to insure our needs and expectations were met and exceeded.
