We had a fabulous time in New Zealand with our whole family of 4. Our kids are 20 and 18 years old. We were hoping that all of us would enjoy this trip and we did. Being in a group with two wonderful leaders and experiencing this amazing country in an "active" way was really worth it.

Of course it's nice to be a totally fit 30-Something jock, but it is also OK to enjoy this trip as a retired teacher with two hip replacements! There are so many different activities with varied physical challenges. My patient guides, Reon and Sarah, were always encouraging and fun. There were often choices for the group. Near Mt Cook some of the group hiked about 1000 steep rock steps up the mountain, while the rest of us did a valley hike to a glacial lake complete with icebergs. It was raining, cold, and foggy and we had a blast! At the end we all stripped off our wet layers and enjoyed a memorable warm drink in the beautiful coffee shop at the base of the mountain. Active NZ sends you a list of physical activities to do to prepare for the trip, and you will enjoy yourself more if you have taken those suggestions to heart. I did the 3 day kayak in Marlborough Sound, and although there were some serious waves to contend with, arriving at our comfortable, remote lodge, in a lush green forest ,was worth every paddle stroke.

We fell in love with your country thanks to the excellent service from Ben and Nick as well as the entire Active NZ crew! You made sure we did not miss one step of our journey despite our tragedy with our team. We are so grateful for your support. The details that Ben and Nick provided made the trip so special, such as the surprise [removed so as not to ruin the surprise!], the tim tam slam, bridge jump, Black Seeds concert, plus all the memory photo sessions. Ben and Nick became part of our family. We miss them already. We think they would do a fantastic job on your Patagonia trip!! Many thanks to you all for a wonderful time. Until we meet again. Happy Tramping! Vickie Firkins

Our recent Rimu adventure allowed us to cross one off of our bucket list. We originally thought that we could visit New Zealand and Australia in the same trip. After looking at the tour itineraries on the Active NZ web site, it became obvious that there was too much to do in just New Zealand for one visit. Friends of ours in Nashville, Tennessee, were organizing a trip and had decided on the Rimu. It sounded perfect, and we immediately decided to join in. They were doing a stopover in Tahiti, which also happened to be on our bucket list... perfect! We got out of Michigan just before a snowstorm arrived, but our Nashville friends were not so lucky. Their plane was delayed by an ice storm (in Texas, of all places) and they arrived a day late in Tahiti, but were able to make the flight to NZ. Kate and Amanda met us at the Christchurch Airport, and we were off. We had many challenging activities, but our group was always up for it. The weather challenged us a bit too, but remarkably the trip was minimally affected. Our three-day kayak in the Malborough Sounds ended up a two day as severe winds came through the sound. We were able to substitute an amazing hike on Day 2 and that night capped it off with some play time with 'phosphorescence' in the bay, and Glowworms in the forest. Wow! On Day 5, torrential rains (60 cm or around 24 inches!) fell overnight to our south, washing out the Wanganui River bridge, blocking our route to Okarito. Active came up with a novel solution. They hired a pilot and Cessna to fly our group and luggage across to another airport south of the bridge. On the return flights a stranded Southbound Rimu group was ferried back, after which we swapped tour buses. This allowed both groups to continue on their way - thanks Jon! After a couple more great days of hiking and kayaking, it was time to head to the Franz Josef Glacier. Luckily the wind had dried the trail enough to hike all of the way to a glacier overlook. What a view! Next it was on our way to Queenstown with an epic mountain bike ride in between. The layover day in Queenstown provided some well needed rest, along with some fantastic meals. Can you say 'Fergburger'? The weather came into play again as we were preparing to drive to Milford Sound. A second major rainstorm came through and the road was closed out of concern for landslides. Kate and Amanda did everything possible to work around this obstacle, but it was not to be. It just means we'll need to return to see Milford Sound another time. The weather gods smiled on us for the last stop though. We stopped along Lake Pukaki on the way into Braemar Station. We were blessed with an unbelievable view of Mount Cook and the surrounding peaks, with the glacial blue waters of the lake in front. Amazing! The sheep farm was the icing on the cake. What a way to wrap up a fantastic two weeks of adventure. We couldn't have had a better time - the guidance of our trip leaders Kate and Amanda, including the preparation of most of our awesome, varied meals. The graciousness of our many hosts at our overnight stops. The friendliness of the local Kiwis, and who could forget the variety of tasty NZ beers. The list goes on. Highly recommended to anyone considering a true New Zealand adventure.

Our trip was phenomenal!!!! Not only were our guides the best and most flexible, the staff you had backing them up to help when unexpected things arose could not have performed better. They all performed miracles. Who else could have pulled a helicopter out of their hat, which actually saved our friend's life. Thanks so much for a fabulous trip.

Our trip was wonderful with positive, professional, enthusiastic guides. We saw so much of the South Island that we could never have covered on our own. The Kiwi trip was a "just right" combination of sight-seeing while driving, hiking, and occasionally kayaking. We stayed in truly unique places that showcased the real New Zealand.

Amelia and Elle facilitated a wonderful vacation for us. They were happy all the time and very responsive to our wishes and the idiosyncracies of the weather. They always had a Plan B, and sometimes a Plan C. Amelia's commentaries were very informative, and Elle's cooking ... well, I wish I'd taken her home with me. Deliciously healthy and as well as accommodating various dietary requirements. We could never have seen as much of NZ on our own in 4 or even 6 weeks by the time we sought out accommodation, restaurants, activity opportunities and trailheads. Also a big thanks to the other 14 vacationers on our tour. A fantastic bunch of up-beat folk from all stages of life. We lucked out majorly with respect to these travel companions.

Lauren and Sarah were a terrific pair. Obviously, Active NZ has done its homework. The locations were awesome and even if the weather did not always cooperate, Lauren and Sarah were glad to make allowances for us "not so seasoned" hikers. I have been with numerous outfitters and I will have to say that the quality of the food was excellent, no matter how remote our location happened to be. I give Lauren and Sarah a big "thumbs up" for being so enthusiastic and helpful with all aspects of the trip. They were the icing on the cake.

This trip was exactly what I wanted. Something active and different every day. Not all hiking or all biking, but a nice mix of everything. I even welcomed the time on the bus, which gave us an opportunity to talk to other people on the trip as well as to rest up for the next adventure. Our guides, Lina and Nat, were fantastic and of course you just can't beat the South Island for scenery! Even had the opportunity to go hang gliding - a lifelong item on my wish list.
