This was a great way to see the North Island! I had a blast and it was the perfect addition to the Tui trip. I would love to try the extended version of this trip as well!

At 69 years old I decided to return to Nepal to attempt the Everest Base Camp trek with Active. This is my fourth Active trip so I knew that if it was possible, Active would make it so. To give myself the best chance of completing the trek, I filled my summer with bicycling and hiking. (I actually biked more than 3500 km over the summer. It is amazing how a challenge helps ones motivation to get in shape!) Prior to Nepal I stopped off in Turkey and spent 6 days on one of its long distance trails - The Lycian Way. Arriving in Nepal, I spent 4 days doing the Poon Hill trek out of Pokhara. And finally, in Kathmandu, I met our Everest Base Camp group - a small but diverse group made up of a New Zealander, a Canadian (me) and 5 Americans. I immediately recognized the hallmarks of an Active trip - the attention to detail, friendly and competent guides, great communication, and the confidence instilled in members of the group that this was a great adventure, and that we were up for it. And it was a great adventure! The views were spectacular from day 1, the route ever changing and yes, challenging. Our lodgings were always comfortable, with a touch of luxury at just the right times, the food - nutritious and good. I found particularly fascinating the activity on and around the route: the porters, yaks and mules supplying the villages and guest houses, other trekkers on their way up or down, and the insights to ordinary people and their activities, making a living in this spectacular but isolated landscape. It is a long way from our comfortable homes and modern conveniences that we are so use to. But if smiles and friendly greetings are an indication, their lives are as happy and rich, without the trappings of western life. And I did make it to the base camp and back again, an achievement that is certainly a major highlight of my life. Kate, our Active guide, did a superb job of managing the group, and making participants as comfortable and confident as possible. She never tired of answering the same question over and over. "What is that mountain over there?" Kate had a few extra problems to overcome as the flu/cold hit our group and her compassion and medicine chest helped eased the resulting aches and pains as we approached the base camp and made our way back down again. Our Nepalese guides were two of the most wonderful people I have met on my travels; attentive, professional, and always with a smile and a greeting. It would be worth a return trip just to meet up with them again. Our porters were an enthusiastic group who actually seem to enjoy carrying our stuff over climbs that brought us ordinary trekkers to a gasping stop at one of many rest spots. Now that I am home, somewhat recovered from jet lag and my Nepalese cold/flu, my thoughts are turning to the idea that maybe there is at least one more adventure left in me. Where will it be?

This trip was absolutely everything I expected. I felt like every day was full of activities and I had so many great experiences. Each day was long but the week was short! The food and accommodations were not luxury, but we stayed in comfortable and clean places and the food was great, especially the food the guides prepared. The group we went with was amazing. In fact, the whole experience was so great I'm looking at the Galapagos trip! I would travel with Active again in a heartbeat.

We booked the Weka trip to celebrate our 60th birthdays which were on November 12, our first day of the trip and the other on November 17, the day we did the Haast Pass so this made the trip and our birthdays very memorable. The guides were super fun and very knowledgeable about New Zealand and the small group atmosphere enabled us to create lasting friendships. Thanks for a grand time. Even the 'little' incident and the ride in a helicopter was pretty awesome.

  • Machu Picchu & Amazon Adventure

My now wife Sarah and I decided a few years ago that we wanted to have a small, intimate destination wedding at Machu Picchu. We've been travel junkies for just under a decade and have been to a number of European countries as well as a few trips to other states here in the USA. Born and raised in central New York State, we're city folk that look forward to occasionally getting out into the world to appreciate the variety of amazing natural wonders, history, cultures, languages and people that share this enormous planet with us. In the past, we've always mapped out and navigated our own vacation adventures. This was our first ever guided trip... and Active Adventures set a new bar of expectation for how we'll look into our vacations going forward, in fact we were so impressed that our next vacation will almost certainly be one of the other guided adventures that Active offers. Peru is like no place in the world we've ever been before. The constant but ever-changing backdrop of the Andes coupled with the timeless landscaping and stonework of the Incas and pre-Incas immediately removes you from your day-to-day life and transports you to another time. There aren't adequate words to describe the sensation of wonder that the scenery evokes...it's something that has to be experienced in order to understand. Our guide Yohn was immediately likeable and was, in my opinion, a master of his trade. Not only did he provide us with facts about where we were, he also elaborated on a lot of the myths, legends and musings in order to give us a better sense of the mystery that abounds in the mountains the Incas and their predecessors once called home. But he was always careful to separate fact from fable so we could come away from our trip with both proven knowledge and a heightened sense of wonder about this world and its history. Furthermore, he talked about his own life and experiences growing up in Peru which even further rounded out our immersion. By the end of the trip, we had an experience of Peru that was deeper, more intimate, and more memorable that anything we could have arranged on our own. I could literally write a book-long review of how awesome this trip was and there wouldn't be a single sentence of negativity. Active handled the arrangements of our wedding, and we were provided a ceremony conducted by two Shamans (father and son) and catered to by wonderful staff on the mountainside of the Pisac Ruins (we were unable to book a ceremony at Machu Picchu due to recently enacted Peruvian regulations. But I'm glad it worked out the way it did! It was amazing!). Like I said, I could go on and on and on... There are so many things I haven't even mentioned like the unforgettable few days in the Amazon Rainforest, the 4-day hike up the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the plethora of ruins we encountered, the man-made floating islands on Lake Titicaca, and SO MUCH MORE. And the people of Peru were AWESOME. We never for a moment felt unsafe, in fact we felt welcome by everyone. I'll end by saying this... Our primary point of interest in deciding on this trip to Peru was, of course, Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is every bit as amazing as you can imagine and more, BUT... I say with full conviction that nearly every day we spent in Peru was filled with sights and wonders we didn't expect. In hindsight, Machu Picchu was just one small part of the overall experience, and there are a great many places on this trip that rivaled it in its ability to just leave you speechless in their presence. If you are considering this trip... Stop considering and start planning. It will enrich your life immensely. Also, be prepared to sweat... They're not called ACTIVE Adventures for nothing :-)

I was so very happy to have chosen Active Adventures land-based Galapagos trip. Not only did we experience all the incredible wildlife and fantastic natural history, but we also got a close-up sense of island living by staying each night in small towns. The wide variety of activities kept us going all day long. I am not sure how the trip could have been any better.

This was a trip of a lifetime.......we hiked to fabulous vistas off the beaten path not known to most tourists. I noticed in the Angelus Hut guest book that there were only 12 other Americans there all year! Although somewhat demanding, the level of exercise was right up my alley and I felt challenged and exhilarated. Our guides, Amanda and Ben, met our every need and were lovely young people. They possessed great cultural and geographic knowledge of New Zealand and were truly skilled at making our trip the best possible. This was my second Active trip and I would definitely go again, perhaps to the Himalayas next time. Thank you Active for a spectacular adventure!

This was by far one of the best adventures I have ever been on. Tim and Sally were an amazing team and they are both as cool as. The organization, timing and backup plans through the entire trip were spot on. We were quite lucky as the weather was in our favor the entire trip. It was awesome to have good home cooked food for the majority of our trip...thanks Sally! I must say that I miss New Zealand and our Active team Sally and Tim. I am already looking into returning in 2015. This trip was worth every penny and I cannot wait to return.

I fell in love with New Zealand and with Active Adventures. New Zealand was even more beautiful than I had imagined. The South Island is roughly the size of my home state of Illinois, and yet it has glaciers, ocean beaches and rainforest - and we saw it all on the Kiwi trip! Our guides Sarah and Graeme made it so enjoyable. Of course they were informative, but even more important, they were just great people to be around - funny, encouraging and attentive. I loved the quirky motels we stayed in and the large houses we shared. It was so nice to stay in and enjoy Sarah's cooking rather than having to go out to a restaurant every night. This is my fourth hiking trip with four different companies. I definitely prefer Active Adventures' approach to housing and food, more adventurous and more relaxed at the same time. Our last two nights at the shearer's quarters at Braemar Station were amazing! I'll never forget rounding the bend of the driveway and seeing the view for the first time. It's simply stunning! What a wonderful way to end the trip.

I don't think words accurately describe the beauty of Nepal. Every time I looked up and around, it was a 'WOW' moment. I am not sure I will go on another trip that was as exciting, exhilarating and as challenging as EBC. It was a trip of a lifetime. If you want an adventure, Nepal is for you.
