It was an amazing trip and the guides and guests were fantastic. In addition to our head guide, we had "specialist" guides for each of the areas we visited. On the Inca trail, my husband and I were the laggards of our group and were quite late for lunch at one of our stops. You can imagine our shock to find two porters trudging up the mountain (quite a distance from our destination) to bring us lunch, including an assorment of hot teas! They were gracious, and stayed with us all the way to camp. The only reason this trip did not get the trip of a lifetime designation is that we also took an Active New Zealand trip a few years ago, and can't decide which one we enjoyed more.

This trip was three years in the making and Active did not disappoint. Lina and Nat were amazing guides that were not only very knowledgeable but funny and approachable and added all of the special personal touches to make this a truly memorable and rewarding experience. I cannot wait to go back to New Zealand and would definitely choose Active again.

Another trip of a lifetime. Some of the most stunning scenery I have witnessed from enormous glaciers and icebergs to stunning rock pillars and towering mountains. This trip had it all for me. The guiding was of the highest order and the food and accommodation a lot better than I had expected in such remote areas.

Torres Del Cynthia. I really thought that this trip was up there with the very best experiences I have had. The scenery was stunning virtually all the way. The company was lively and friendly but the star was Cynthia who made us all feel so at ease and comfortable. The only black mark on the whole thing was having to use tents one night. It happened to be blowing a hoolie and snowing but overall 10 out of 10.

I have been traveling for 25 yrs now, but this trip ranks right up there with some of my best experiences. To be able to go off the beaten track to where the "normal tourists" don't get to... amazing!! We considered doing it ourselves, but after seeing where Active would take us, we knew there was no way we would come close to these experiences. And our guides, Dan S and Elle, after one week it felt like we were all family!! They made sure that everyone had an incredible experience no matter what they had to do. I have never experienced such expertise of the guides. I think Dan was stumped one time during the week by a question, and by god, he googled it and found out!! But from flora to fauna, Dan and Elle knew their stuff!! If my pocketbook and body were willing, I'd be back again right now!!! I will definitely do another Active trip!!!

Rimu was the best guided trip I have ever been on -- off the beaten path, staying in small out-of-way places instead of big hotels, challenging hiking, biking, and kayaking, spectacularly beautiful mountains and beaches, delicious healthy food. Ken's love and knowledge of New Zealand are encyclopedic and contagious. Nicole provided incredible meals and a caring, steady presence on all our hikes, taking time for quiet conversation and an encouraging word. They worked so well together and helped build a really cohesive group.

Manuka with Lofty and Mel: Lofty is very knowledgeable about plants and birds. He was terrific about making sure that I was doing okay on our hikes (at almost 74, I was slower than the rest of our group) and Lofty is a great story teller. Mel made the best poached eggs ever and was also patient with me when we had lots of rocks to climb. Active does a wonderful job of planning the trips and having alternate plans available when necessary. I was very impressed with all the meals they prepared. Having laundry facilities available was a plus. All this, plus New Zealand is a gorgeous country.

Active New Zealand has a really well-planned trip with its Rimu adventure. However, what really made this trip superior were my fun fellow (4) tour mates and, especially, the super nice and competent tour guides, Ben C. and Nick B.

I had an excellent time on the Kauri tour, the guides (Dave and Lauren) were fantastic and did a wonderful job keeping up the energy and enthusiasm, and listening to our suggestions. It's a full schedule, so be prepared for a 7am-5pm day! I rate 4.5 of 5 stars as we weren't able to do the Tongariro Crossing, oh, due to some eruption or the other... but I suppose I'll just have to return to NZ! Great experience, excellent people!

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. Trekking to one of the highest places on earth that can be reached by 'regular' people is an unforgettable experience. The spectacular views, the close-up view of a very different culture--both poeple and animals en route, the sheer exhaustion, the completely unique terrain, the sense of major accomplishment will stay with us always. While numerous trekkers use the same route, they certainly don't all have the context that our trek enjoyed: capable, consciencious, up-beat leaders, especially Dan, who made a point to touch base with each of us individuals at various points on the trail and otherwise. Gokol was extremely helpful and responsible, the porters were amazing, also very helpful and always seemed to be in good spirits. We just enjoyed them as persons--and tried to compensate them accordingly; we hope they enjoyed being part of our trek. Every day was a new venture. It took a while to get into the rhythm of the trek schedule and the challenges of ensuring enough potable water, clean hands (e.g., for putting in contact lenses) and other aspects of personal health and hygiene. It's amazing what we take for granted at home! Although we had talked with friends who had recently trekked the Annapurna Circuit about the nitty-gritty of their experience, the reality of the landscape on our trip and what was labeled simply "steep staircase" on the map could not have been totally anticipated. From conversations in the group it seems that everyone found the trek to be more challenging than they had anticipated. Especially at first--until we learned how to interpret--Dan's estimates of time required for certain segments of the hike were, for at least half of us, quite a bit shorter than the actual time needed. Perhaps the estimates could be modified for types of hikers, e.g., extremely fit, moderately fit, "could be more fit," with a range of times so that no one would feel too incapable. While we haven't hiked/trekked with all that many groups, this group was the best ever! In a variety of ways, each person tried to support others, so we really enjoyed not only getting to know others on the trek but also sensing that others would be helpful and patient (even if they might not have felt like being patient with those of us who always arrived last!). We also had fun together--and that means a lot when traveling with "strangers." The Annapurna Trek will remain a highlight of our lives--thank you for providing the means for climbing to the top of the world.

In addition to being able to engage in a variety of activities, we were able to see a significant portion of the South Island. Everything was well organized both before and during the trip. The entire trip was outstanding.
