The trip was planned, coordinated and executed by Active Adventures to perfection. While the guides on all trips have been great, Holly was superb. She couldn't have been more attentive and fun. While I just got home last week, I'm already planning my next Active Adventure. Kendall

Having had an awesome Rimu trip in 2016, we decided that North Island meant the Kauri trip in 2018, and we were not disappointed. As ever, Active Adventures lived up to its name and provided a truly epic look at North Island, in the well looked after way that we had come to expect. It was unexpected, however, that we would be the only clients on the tour and so had a fully personalised trip and Koru (our wonderful guide) became our friend, mentor and Maori expert. What a treat.
North Island is, of course, very different from South Island. Less epic mountains and more coastal bays, less outback and more culture, and (coming in June instead of February) less hot sun and more variable weather. Coming from Scotland we are used to all 4 seasons in one day, and found the temperatures very conducive to walking and the intermittent storms were dramatic, but Koru directed the activities to suit the weather and we found clear skies and fantastic views nearly everywhere we went.
We had so many highlights that it is difficult to specify a couple, but in our minds forever are the night walk to the biggest and oldest kauri trees, singing Maori chants in the starlight; the stunning coastal walks; the visit to the Treaty Grounds (only organised because of bad weather at that point but very very good and so glad we got to do it); glowworms in caves in a wetsuit and rubber ring; Tongariro Crossing with crampons and ice picks (!) and Koru's constant happy smile and attention to us.

I loved, loved, LOVED this trip! I've always considered myself a "close to the ground" traveler - though the sights may be spectacular, I go to experience the culture and meet the people. To that end, I have equated spending less, to avoiding chain hotels and Americanized food. I chose this trip for 4 reasons: 1) Level of activity and adventure (experiences), 2) It was all inclusive, 3) I wanted to travel with a small group, and 4) Active Adventures has excellent customer ratings. I was NOT disappointed, in any way. We stayed in very nice (much better than my usual), locally owned and managed hotels. We ate delicious local food. I met the local people, and learned about the culture. Every day was filled with discovery, excitement, and activity. I was never bored AND I was never stressed. Someone else - one of the my fabulous guides - always took care of all the details. Gustavo, our primary guide was fabulous! His charm and sense of humor are natural and delightful. He seemed to anticipate our needs, before we did. We were family (in a really good way). A truly amazing guy. Puma, my Inca Trail guide was incredibly experienced and knowledgeable. He is a wealth of information about Peru, the people, the history, and Incan religion, culture, and architecture. I learned so much from him and enjoyed countless hours of conversation. As someone who has limited knowledge of other languages, I was absolutely amazed at the fluency of our guides. Both Gustavo and Puma had superb English. Of course, their Spanish was flawless as well. In the case of Puma, who's native tongue is Quechua, I was dealing with a true multilingual. It was quite a kick to offer up a new word or slang phrase. He took pleasure equal to mine in learning something new. Although I didn't take this trip anticipating that it would be "the trip of a lifetime", it truly was. Many thanks for an amazing experience!

Loved this tour! We were fortunate enough to be the only 2 people on it so were totally spoilt by our guides Andy, Suzanne and Holly. Andy and Suzanne were so knowledgeable and always looked out for us. They catered for our level of fitness, therefore we completed our days hiking with enough time to have a relaxing coffee or beer. So glad we trained for this tour! The food was excellent and accommodation great. We’d certainly love to come back and explore this beautiful part of the world again.

Trip is well organized and food is excellent. Guides for the trip I was on were excellent: Katie and Maya. They were a great team which created a comfortable team oriented atmosphere. They shared local, and natural history stories through out the trip which gave great background and context to what we were seeing and experiencing. They were clear about what to expect each day by providing a preview the evening before and again at breakfast so we could have the right gear/clothing handy. I can't say enough about Katie and Maya and their integral part in my excellent experience.

I loved every day of this trip. The guides were fabulous and the hiking amazing. Having trained for the trip, our guides ensured we were suitably challenged with the hikes and we were extremely happy with everything we did. We were so well looked after and had lots of laughs along the way with our amazing guides in this incredible part of the world.

The Dolomites are an amazing place to hike. The landscape is extraordinary and being amongst it has been an awesome experience. Mike and Ivan are fabulous and knowledgeable guides. The trip notes and itinery are excellent and a bit of pre-trip training totally paid off. Mike is such a friendly and funny guy that kept us laughing throughout the trip. 10 out of 10 I would totally recommend this trip.

The first six days of this adventure was simply put - AWESOME. The trip guides were first class, the hiking challenges were a challenge, the accommodations very adequate, and the fellow hikers- top notch. Active Adventures tailored my trip to meet other previously scheduled commitments. Great organization and terrific hiking support. Be prepared for a superlative adventure.

Upon coming home from my trip, everyone I know who has been to New Zealand has been dazzled by my explanations of where I went. I booked with Active because I wanted an opportunity to see places I probably wouldn't manage to see as a tourist on my own, and to do activities safely that were adventurous and fun and outside the run-of-the-mill tours I could book with others. Since it was winter, I chose the North Island Kauri trip. It was everything I wanted. We did lots of adventurous, difficult (but not *too* difficult) hikes and other activities and saw parts of New Zealand that most tourists don't ever manage to see. Jackie and Maddi put their personal touches on our tour, and were aces at making sure we did great things even in the face of some obstacles. It was exactly what I needed out of my vacation. Thanks, Active!
